Weekly Response #3- Maribel Gomez

In Buñuel’s 1932 film work, Land Without Bread, he attempted to add a sense of visual poetry/art through this film. It is also hard to consider this as a documentary when there is a fair amount of work to portray this village as dreadful. Although once I saw this film is considered a pseudo-documentary portrait on IMDb, it fits correctly within the category. It lingers on a similarity to Nanook of the North as the film tries to dramatize the life of a small group of people inhabiting an isolated land. The concept of making a statement in order to capture the attention of the audiences through a documentary format is necessary to communicate to the audiences. However, it does not have to include the death and suffering of animals for the purpose of “art.” The animation film, Buñuel in the Labyrinth of the Turtles, was a very enjoyable way to express the journey throughout the filming for Land Without Bread. The narration for the crews was moving, especially between Buñuel and Ramón.
