Waverly Takayama – Las Hurdes Land without bread

Watching this film, we questioned what elements make up documentary. For one, we take into consideration that Buñuel did in fact get a message across and shared the very real story of the people who live there. In the other hand, we also realize how much of it was staged to produce the most dramatized version of these real stories. Now we question does the addition of these elements make this any lesser then a real documentary or does it add to the idea by having this dramatic essence that can touch the emotions of the viewers. The point of the documentary was to show the audience how the people of Las Hurdes live, to share their hardships with the world and allow the world to take charge in changing their circumstances. I believe this is a documentary, that all he did was use his skills of film making, like one would use their own lighting techniques or camera angles, to add to the documentary’s story.
