Weekly Response #11- Maribel Gomez

When watching the documentary, A Woman Without a Piano Tribute, my thoughts were about how society has changed, where now women don’t have the need to settle in a marriage and have children. This reminded me of a video on Instagram where a man interviewed some elderly in the UK on the topic of what they would do if they were in their 20s/would they get married again in their 20s? I noticed many of the women said they wouldn’t get married at a young age or not even ever consider marriage at all. While the men in the video consider marriage as an essential need to acquire throughout their lives. One elderly gentleman was worried if his daughter would ever get married to her partner, forgetting that within a marriage there is no guaranteed chance that they will stay together just because they sign a few papers. In the film Tristana (1970), a young orphan woman, Tristana, is taken advantage of by her guardian, Don Lope, after the passing of her mother. Don Lope grooms Tristana into becoming his wife. Tristana’s appearance starts off with innocent, light-colored clothing and soft makeup. Afterwards throughout the film, she dressed in darker colors, and her skin was more pale, and her makeup looked sharper and dark as well. Tristana is forced to return to Don Lope’s care after she loses her leg. This can be shown as surrealist imagery within Tristana’s dream. An image that stuck with me was the bell tower with Don Lope’s head as the clapper. I feel like the imagery represents Don Lope as a forgotten man, as the campanero described the bell tower as not noticed and not important anymore.
