Week 11

Tristiana is a film that utilizes a critical lens to focus on topics like misogyny and disability. It takes place in Spain during a time of authoritarian rule, and the film follows a young woman who is under the guardianship of Don Lope. As a result of this, Tristiana ends up a subject of gendered oppression as he assumes complete control over her and dictates her every move. This was meant to reflect the social norms of the time. The struggle she has to gain autonomy showcases the limited independence women had in a male dominated society. Eventually this dynamic is altered once Don Lope has a heart attack. It goes to show that aside from law and societal constructs, that these dynamics are also enforced in the personal relationships of the characters in this world. The subject of disability stands as a metaphor of moral corruption. The more physically weak one becomes  alters their authority.  The loss of Trisitana leg limits her mobility both literally and metaphorically. Her ability to walk was symbolic of potential independence. Don Lope throughout the film made it a point to assert his control over her both through his actions and through lingering comments. Ironically, the loss of her leg gives her even more power because it fueled her to reverse the dynamic.
