The Discreet Charm Of The Bourgeoisie

The film exhibited this week shares a primary commonality with Viridiana in that it is one of Buñuel’s more overt critiques. This film’s focal point again raises amongst the titular aristocratic class and all of their shortcomings. The main troupe is depicted as a doltish bunch of drug peddlers that operate outside of the rest of average society. The group seemingly lives only to venture to one another’s houses for lavish and ritualistic dinner parties, or to have an affair with another’s wife. Buñuel did a tremendous job at highlighting the depravity and gauche nature of the demographic during this time in Europe. An important thing to note that was brought up in class was the different way that narcotics are depicted based around class. Much like how Crack and Cocaine have the same chemical makeup, the one favored by lower income demographics is penalized much more heavily and regarded as much more of a societal problem than the casual drug usage and smuggling that the aristocracy perpetuated in the film. One of the film’s defining aspects however, was the true surrealist return to form exhibited through nonsensical dream within dream sequences. They imbue the audience with the same drug induced stupor the main characters are understood to be in and further polarize their ritualistic and arbitrary lifestyle.
