Wow! I believe that more than any of his films, Buñuel showcases here just how well he can develop multiple characters at once—and get his movie’s message delivered without broadness. Every relationship feels stringed together to tell a calamitous story, further exploring innocence & the role of capitalism in removing childhood from children born under it, even the most evil characters constructed by Buñuel are undebatable victims of their environment – we witness young boys in a environment removed of love, where play is palatable to murdering and robbing, where abuse come from our elders that also provide us sanctuary, nobody is allowed to be a child without paying a price – even the “nicest” kids we meet are put into uniforms and forced to labor in their environment – I can’t stop going back to this depiction created by Buñuel and going “Wow! That’s (bleep) up!” I’d recommend “Sicarro” (1994) for anyone looking for a film with a similar theme.
