Weekly Response #12 (Aneesa Zaragoza)

The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie is one of the most interesting uses of surrealism in that it serves as a plot device used to criticize social issues such as class, authority and power. Buñuel’s film, which on a surface has a clear and straight forward plot, is one of the films most critical of these issues in relation to authoritarianism which Buñuel lived under during his time in Mexico and France. He makes it apparent in each of his films that he is against hierarchies of the bourgeoisie and that is translated through his use of repetition. Repetition is a prominent tool in the film that aids in the surreal sequences which makes the audiences question whether the things happening were real to the narrative or just fantasy. The film follows the story of a group of bourgeois that try to sit down and have a dinner but are constantly interrupted. Other actions throughout the film are also interrupted such as sexual acts and conversations, but the insistence of the dinner being had portrays the safety net that is the mundane routines of the wealthy class. This point is further proven through their conversations which barely touch any further than a surface level. It feels as if these people are constantly trying to get to know each other for the first time every time they sit down together. It highlights how isolated and morally bankrupt these individuals are as they do not acknowledge the issues of struggling classes. Their only real acknowledgement of real world problems is their expressed paranoia towards terrorism which was on the rise globally at the time of which the film was made which was around the late 60’s and very early 70’s. Another prominent aspect of the film is grotesque imagery. There is a constant call to blood, death and violence which is what the characters seem to constantly brush over or completely ignore. The way they react to these traumatic and gruesome surreal sequences is telling of how much they ignore the world around them unless it is something that affects them or is a direct threat to them.
